1947
FIRST MEETING
North Macomb’s first meeting was held in March of 1947. Following is a list of

1st ANNUAL PICNIC
NMSC’s first annual picnic was held in 1948.
LAND PURCHASED
In 1948 NMSC purchased 40 acres of land from
William Stefanski.
RIFLE RANGE
In 1948 a member who wished to use the rifle range could do so by picking up the
keys to the range and a spotting scope at Ernie’s Tavern in Washington.
MEMBERSHIP DUES
The dues in 1948 were $3.00 a year plus an initiation fee of $3.00.
1949

DOG TRIALS AND ORGANIZED HUNTS
This year had many different events,
including dog trials and organized hunts. It was also the first year for the
Chicken Shoot.
YOUTH CAMP
A one hundred question test was given to
select delegates to go to youth camp. The
test came from the “Game & Fishing Digest”. The two boys who won were sent
all expenses paid.
FREE BEER AT MEETINGS
Beer started being served in April at meetings. There was no charge for beer
but there was a “kitty” for donations.

Meetings are still being held at the American
Legion “Fox Hole” in Utica. Board
meetings at Ernie’s Tavern in Washington.
TERM LIMITATIONS
Term limitations were set this year at a maximum of 2 years, excluding the
secretary.
SUSPENSION
Club member suspended for arrest and pleading guilty for stealing chickens.
NEWSLETTER
October of 1950 saw the first NMSC newsletter.

FARMER RELATIONS
NMSC members were promoting farmer relations
to soften the impact of the upcoming hunting season.
LOAN
The banks denied the loan to NMSC for new Clubhouse.
HUNTER’S TROPHY SHOOT
Was arranged for the first time. Held
at annual picnic and created by Andy Downey.
CONSTRUCTION
Planning for building the new clubhouse is set for the spring of 1954.

The motion was seen to stock Stoney Creek
with smallmouth bass.
FOX HUNT
Lost $1.00 due to intense cold conditions 2 degrees above zero. They also moved the meeting
place because of the weather to the Washington Men’s Club.
DUES
Dues were increased to $5.00 annually.
LOANS
National Bank of Utica offered to loan up to $3,500 to increase the building
fund.
DEER REPORT
The MUCC reported about unusually high deer starvation around the Gaylord area. The size of the herd is too big
for available habitat to carry.
WOMEN VOTING
The unanimous ruling of women to vote equal to men passed in May.
1956

BY-LAWS
NMSC purchased 600 copies of the by-laws for
$105.00.
DEPUTY SHERIFF
Andy Downey and J. Wells Jr. were deputized so that we could have a deputy
sheriff within the club. The
club paid $18 the cost of deputizing both of them.
NEW APPLICANTS TO NMSC
The board of directors made the decision to screen all applicants to NMSC and
that all new members hereafter will require board approval.
STONEY CREEK PARK
Stoney Creek Park could not exclude our club property from the formation of the
park. We must get
appraising from the park and look for another location.
HURON CLINTON
The Board of Directors seems to be resigned to loosing our club to
Huron-Clinton. Huron-Clinton
agreed to let NMSC stay until December of 1958.

SILVERWARE
State Police recovered silverware stolen from
NMSC.
CLUBHOUSE
Huron-Clinton purchased the clubhouse for a total of $49,000.
FOX HUNT
The fox hunt was held on the existing NMSC properties and included 46 hunters.
NEW SITE
There are 45 acres available at Inwood and Mt. Vernon road for $8,800. Huron-Clinton wants this
property in exchange for the regular club site – along with 33 acres adjacent to
the existing property.

GROUNDS
The Club grounds are scheduled to be cleaned. Everything that can be cleared
away is coming out.
CLUB
The clubhouse now has windows and a roof enclosed and an attic is being
considered.
SKEET AND TRAP
Used machines are being considered for purchase and the rifle range is now
staked out and decision on a building for the rifle range is being discussed.
FOX HUNT
Forty hunters showed up and 3 foxes were taken.
DUCK POND
Many discussions of the possibility of creating a duck pond.
FINANCES
Funds are getting very low and a very high possibility for taking out a loan is
happening. Loan was
approved on October 2.

FINANCIAL
Situation looking bad as expense levels were exceeding income. Bingo night was created to help
out the financial situation.
TRAP AND SKEET
Charges per round raised to $3.25 for members and $3.75 for non-members
furnishing their own shells. Team
shooters will pay $1.00 per round and shells are available at $3.00.

FIRST HUNTER SAFETY PROGRAM
The first hunter safety program was put on September 9th.

We purchased playground equipment this year
so that all of the kids would have something to play on.

5 MPH speed limit sign posted for the first time to stop people from speeding
through the parking lot.
HUNTER SAFETY FOR KIDS
Hunter Safety comes to NMSC for the very first time.
NEWSLETTER DISCONTINUED
“The Sportsmen’s Monthly” was discontinued this year, went to a bulletin every
three months.

SAVING THE CLINTON RIVER
Due to a pollution problem, Avon Twp. Park
was closed. NMSC was
worried that the same would happen to others if something wasn’t done. NMSC wrote letters, and got
support from the Detroit Free Press.
HATFIELD ROOM
We enclosed the back porch this year by borrowing money from Tillie Hatfield. We named it the “Hatfield Room”
in loving memory of Jack Hatfield, one of the original NMSC members.

The Ladie’s Auxiliary sent in their

ARCHERY EQUIPMENT
Tillie Hatfield donated Jack’s old archery equipment to be raffled off so we can
buy a flag pole.
LENDING A HELPING HAND
Ran a hunter safety class to Boy Scout troops this year. They really enjoyed it.

UPDATES GALORE
This year was a year for improvements. We added the lights to the
skeet and trap fields for an approximate cost of $1000. We also put a fence around the
duck pond.

We purchased a pool table.

FLAG POLE CONSTRUCTED
After many deliberations about how big, and
where it should go, we built a flagpole so we could do our country proud. We also put a plaque on the
pole to show past presidents that have passed away.
LEGAL LIQUOR
We applied for our liquor license this year. It was denied a couple of times
in the past because we had been operating without it, but it was finally
approved.

BUDWEISER BANNED AT NORTH MACOMB
That’s Right! The #1 ale elixir was
prohibited to be served at NMSC. This
was a joint effort of other sportsmen’s clubs and shooting groups due to a one
million-dollar donation in support of gun control legislation by the Budweiser
Brewing Company.
RECALL CAMPAIGN OF SENATOR PHIL HART
NMSC posted petitions to recall U.S. Senator Phil Hart due to his anti-gun
political position. Recall
campaign not successful….Later the city of Detroit names a Plaza in honor of
Senator Hart.
HUNTING BANNED AT NORTH MACOMB
A one year moratorium on hunting on club grounds was instituted due to a game
habitat started on NE corner of club property.
TALLY HO!
The Fox Hunt was sponsored by NMSC to improve farmer relations.
NMSC MEMBERS BECOME FARMERS
The planting and harvesting of corn on club grounds was a regular activity.
WILDLIFE HABITAT
A duck pond and rabbit shelters were constructed…. each member was requested to
build a “wood duck” house.
PARTY STORE COMPETITION
NMSC considered applying for a license to sell Michigan lottery tickets…. motion
defeated.

After a one year ban by NMSC because of Bud’s
financial support of anti-gun legislation. A few months later Budweiser

HOORAY FOR HOLLYWOOD
Movies were shown at general membership meetings.
“OLD FASHIONED” ANNUAL PICNIC
Corn on the cob, kids games, trout pond, and other entertainment were instituted
by chairman – John Williams.
NMSC MEMBERS NO LONGER FARMING
The harvesting and planting of corn has been concluded.
PHEASANT HUNTING DECLARED DANGEROUS
NMSC members warned about put and take pheasant hunting---could be dangerous to
your health as per the NMSC Conservation General.

Members encouraged not to shave due to Gillette (razor company) donating

SHIP OUT THE WOMEN
A raffle was held in conjunction with Mother’s Day to sponsor North Macomb women
for Aruba trip at a cost of $309. Two
ladies won their prize and went to Aruba; Marge and Tracy Trahan.
PEACH FESTIVAL
North Macomb builds a float for the Parade at the Romeo Peach Festival.
BLACK GOLD! TEXAS TEA!
Michigan Consolidated Gas Company confronts club for a possible oil mining lease
on club grounds. North
Macomb hires a lawyer to look over proposed oil lease contracts. Seismograph tests performed on
club grounds by Bendiz Corp. The
proposed oil lease would be for 3 years. Club would receive 3/16 of oil
production and also control placement of oil rigs.

OIL AND GAS LEASE
NMSC Board of Directors allotted $500 for a
professional service to look into feasibility of an oil and gas lease with
Michigan Consolidated Gas Company.
ADDITIONAL PROPERTY ADJOINING. 33 ACRES
The property (33acres) directly West of Club grounds is put up for sale. NMSC made offer at 2,250 an
acre. Members asked to
pledge additional monies for purchase of this West property. Board would issue bonds to
members with interest paid back at a rate of 8% for 10 years.
SWINGER’S WEEKEND
North Macomb ladies are encouraged to leave husbands at home while they attend a
ladies stag trip to Toronto. Mrs.
Trahan in charge.
MUCC TAKES AGGRESSIVE ACTION
MUCC LAW SUIT AGAINST CBS (TELEVISION BROADCASTING) FOR THEIR BIASED ANTI-GUN

BREAKAGE OF CLAY TARGETS
Club targets were broken by machines while
exiting the shooting house. A
Remington representative was requested to visit NMSC for his advice on this

FISHER BODY SKEET LEAGUE….NOT!
NMSC board rejects a request of the Fisher Body Skeet League to use North Macomb
skeet fields twice a month during the summer months.

North Macomb tax status was changed this year to Tax Exempt – Non Profit.
NEW SHOOTING EVENT INSTITUTED
A metallic target shoot with .22 rifle was started. 40 shooters participated in
this shoot.
HURON-CLINTON
North Macomb worried about take over by Huron-Clinton Metropolitan Authority
Property Condemnation by HCMA.
OIL AND GAS
Contract finally set up and the proposal is approved. Then the Michigan Natural
Resources decided that 8 months was too long to wait for the final decision so
they went elsewhere.

October, 2003 NMSC Board of Directors approves $49,000 for the reconstruction of
trap fields 6. 7 & 8. Work to be started this fall and completed nest spring
without interfering with the winter trap league.
